Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the library?

From the website of the Julia Hull Library, the directions are as follows:
The library is located at the north end of the Stillman Valley High School. To reach it from Route 72, turn south on Walnut Street. Follow Walnut to the end, and turn left (east) on Grant Avenue. The next corner is Maple going north, and Library Lane, going south. Turn right (south) and continue right into the JHDL parking lot.

Who was Julia Hull?
Julia Hill donated the house where the library was housed for many years until it was moved into it's current location attached to the high school.

Why isn't there a police department?
At one time there was a police officer for the village. However, for many years the Ogle County Sheriffs Police has provided police protection. There is relatively little crime in Stillman Valley and the costs of having a dedicated officer or department are prohibitive.

What happens if there's a fire?
In the event of a fire, the Stillman Valley Fire Protection District responds. Although the department is a volunteer fire department it does have a full-time fire chief who responds to calls. Response times are comparable to those of areas where there is a non-volunteer station, if not better.

How did the Royal Blue Restaurant get it's name?
For many years, the Castelli family ran the Royal Blue grocery store. Royal Blue was the name of a grocery store chain that no longer exists. The Royal Blue Grocery Store in Stillman went out of business a few years ago. The new owners of the building wisely decided to retain the name for their restaurant.
